Website Optimization, Meta Tag Customizing for Search Engines

What use is the nicest looking Web page, if the code behind it is not in order or even incorrect?

One way search engines find out what your pages are about are meta tags.

What are Meta Tags?

Meta tags provide information within the source code of an HTML page that is not usually visible in a browser. This information is very important for search engine robots though.

Some examples:

<head>
<title>Short relevant title for this page at least five words</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1>
<meta name="description" content="relevant content description of this page">
<meta name="keywords" content="relevant key words this page should be indexed by">
<meta name="author" content="FSnD Promoting>
<meta name="robots" content="INDEX,FOLLOW>
</head>

Title: The title of the page as it appears in the top line of your browser. Very important! - Regretfully this tag is often neglected. Search engines often use this tag to index a page. Should not have more than 60 characters.

Content-Type: "iso-8859-1" tells the browser which character set to use when displaying the page. This is very important for pages that do not use a standard North American character set, such as many European languages do. (also important for the Apple-World).

Description: If possible, a complete sentence( up to 200 characters ) that contains a concise description of the Web page. Is used by search engines when displaying search results, also used for ranking.

Keywords: The relevant KEY words or search words for the page. These phrases and words are indexed and retrieved when displaying results by the search engine. 255 characters are OK. The sequence these words and phrases are place ins is also important. The keywords should also appear as far upfront within the content of your page for the search engines to consider them valid. A good place for keywords are titles.

Author: The person responsible for creating the page. Sometimes diplayed in the search results of search engines.

Robots: Tells the search robots and spiders whether to index a page or not, and whether to follow-up links within the page or not.

Keep in mind there is far more to meta tags and promoting than we can explain on just one page.

We will create the meta tags relevant for the content of your Web site according to the exact sequence and amount expected by the most popular search engines for well optimized HTML pages. These we will then insert into your HTML code after consultation with you or your webmaster.

The contents of your page or Web presentation is also important. Make sure you do not overload your page with pictures and do not create pages that are too large.

For your start page it is recommended to first find out the most important search or key words for your presentation. Ask customers, friends or acquaintances which search words they would use in their preferred search engine to find your page.

Titles marked as H1 - are definitely better evaluated than just using plain text.
